Assos Review

Assos is a Switzerland-based manufacturer of cycling clothing and accessories. In the mid-1970s, Toni Maier-Moussa (founder and chairman of Assos) worked to create a carbon fiber bike frame. At the time, carbon fiber was restricted for use on top secret aeronautical projects. When Toni asked for permission to use the material on bike frames, the Pentagon was skeptical. After Toni convinced them of his mission, the Pentagon allowed him to use carbon fiber for his bike frames. Thus began the era of carbon fiber bike frames. His other contributions to the biking world include developing the first cow-horn-shaped handlebars to increase aerodynamic capabilities and a Lycra skin-suit and shorts that reduced drag. The cow-horn-shaped handlebars force the rider to lean forward, thereby cutting down on wind resistance. Toni continues as an innovator and visionary in cycling technology for Assos, albeit in a lesser role, to the present day. Assos produces cycling apparel for men and women. The company has shorts, knickers/tights, body insulators, jerseys, jackets, and shells (a thin outer layer designed to go over a jersey and under a jacket) for both genders. The company also produces leisure clothing. This includes pants, tops, caps, socks, bags, towels, and cushions. Accessories produced by Assos include arm protectors, warmers, summer and winter gloves and caps and socks, overshoes, headbands, and water bottles. There are an average-size number of products available in the Assos product lines. The biking community is pleased with the looks, quality, comfort, durability, fit, and design of Assos cycling apparel. They also enjoy the zippered key pocket on Assos jerseys. However, the biking community notes that Assos products are expensive, even at discounted rates.

Pricing

Assos products are expensive. One website listed new bib knickers for ladies on sale for $159.99. Another website listed a pair of new men’s bib shorts for $59.97 and a new men’s cycling jacket for $377.97. At another website, men’s half-fingered summer gloves are available for $65.95. Full-fingered summer gloves cost $71.95. Buying a three pack of men’s gloves costs $189.95.
