Joe Montgomery founded Cannondale Mountain Bikes in 1971. At first, the company did not manufacturer mountain bikes, but rather supplies campers could use while biking outdoors. Montgomery did not start out as an avid professional cycler as so many cycling company founders have. Instead, he worked on Wallstreet. When he experienced an accident that nearly killed him, he reevaluated life and chose to take a new avenue – Cannondale Mountain Bikes.

The first Cannondale Mountain Bikes rolled off the assembly line in 1983. The frames were created from bullet-proof material. Other characteristics included wider tires and handle bars that were straight. Cannondale Mountain Bikes quickly became popular and the company continued to progress as technology and frame assembly methods advanced. Popular searched parts include Shimano derailleur, SRAM crankset, and Avid brakes.

Those first days as a beginning company have faded away and today Cannondale Mountain Bikes are produced in more than 75 models with top of the line materials including aluminum and carbon in their forks, cranks, etc. Models range from those created for general use to professional models with full suspension.

According to the founder of Cannondale Mountain Bikes, it is not about selling more bikes than the competition, it is about selling the best bikes on the market today. Cannondale plans to achieve that goal by continuing to produce bikes with cutting edge design and materials.

In 2010, Cannondale Mountain Bikes include a variety of models including full suspension and hard tail. In addition, a new model called Flash was also introduced. Flash makes use of carbon fiber technology to improve durability and decrease frame weight. The bike comes fully ready for racing. Cannondale also produces bags and backpacks.
