Brake Rims Review

Bikes typically come with two kinds of braking systems. Newer, more expensive bikes come with disc brakes. Some road racer bikes or family bikes will come with rim brakes. Rim brakes are the typical kind of brake you see on most bikes with the “horseshoe” shaped caliper and rubber brake pads. Rim brakes squeeze the bike tire rim when the brake lever is pulled. Popular rim brands include Freedom rims and G sport rims.

Rim brakes are not the best style of brakes and a lot of that has to do with the rim itself. Your bike rims are constantly being worn out as you apply the brakes. Every time the brake pad drags against the rim a tremendous amount of heat is built up. The rim is heated and cooled so many times that it can wear out over time. Heat can also buildup so much on some heavy bikes when they are traveling and braking downhill. If the rim overheats, a tire blowout can occur, which cause a nasty crash to occur. Rims need to be periodically inspected to make sure they are not wearing unevenly, have cracks in them, or have become warped due to intense heat exposure. Flybikes and GT bike rims deflects shock better for BMX riders. Sun Ringle rims are also durable for BMX and mountain bikes.

Bike rims come in many styles, sizes, and colors, depending on your exact needs. Some rims, like Odyssey rims and WTB rims, are specifically designed for disc brakes, while other rims are suited better for rim brakes or caliper brakes. Make sure you buy the right rims for your specific brake type. You should invest money on your bike, by buying a prominent brands like ACS rims and Alex rims. Try to get the best bike brakes and shifters you can, because you are riding on them every time you get on your bike. If you have old, heavy metal rims, replace them with lightweight aluminum models. The lighter your bike, the better and safer the ride becomes. Imagine trying to stop a semi-truck versus that of a small car and you’ll get my point. Also try and buy DT rims with more DT spokes in them because they offer a smoother ride and offer more durability than models with fewer spokes in them. Fulcrum spokes and the Hozan spoke are reliable spoke brandsas well as Edge Composites rim.

What It’s For

Your bike rims are what the bike tires ride on. They contain a hub, spokes and of course the brake components too. Rims can be made of steel, aluminum, alloy metals or even titanium. Modern bike rims and spokes have a quick disconnect feature that allows the bike rider to quickly remove and install the rim and tire without using any tools.
