Bike Single Tools Review

Bike repair and maintenance isn’t that complicated if a rider has the right type of bike single tools. While bicycle repair shops offer an array of services, most repairs and maintenance can be done at home or even on the road. Repairs can include fixing a flat, adjusting a chain, repairing brakes, or replacing shifters. Occasional maintenance, such as tightening and adjusting the derailleurs, can also be done by the amateur bike repairer.

Some of the tools needed for common bike repairs are tools most people have on hand, although there are bike-specific tools used for single repairs on bikes. A good set of wrenches is imperative for a variety of bike repairs. Common wrenches used are a torque wrench, spoke wrench, vise whip wrench, pedal wrench, cone wrench, hex wrench, allen wrench, nut wrench, and brake wrench. Torque, cone, hex, and allen wrenches are all-around wrenches that fix a variety of things and will easily fit nuts and bolts of bikes. These small parts are also of great importance, so pick a top manufacturer like Shimano bolts.

Bike specific wrenches such as the spoke wrench, brake wrench, and pedal wrench are made to make bike repairs. A spoke wrench is a triangular shaped tool that attaches to the nipples of spokes to tighten them. A pedal wrench is designed specifically for bike pedal repairs and to thread the pedals onto the arms. A brake wrench is designed to fit in tight places and should fit snugly around the calipers and springs for brake repairs. Depending on your need, a Pedros wrench could provide the utility you seek.

A crank puller is used to remove the crank arms from either square spindle arms or splined spindle arms to replace chain rings or work on bracket bearings. For crank systems that use a one-key release, no crank puller is required. To work on bottom brackets, a bottom bracket tool specifically designed for bike cartridges is necessary. This tool inserts into the cartridge and a wrench is then used to tighten the bearings. Park Tool offers crank pullers; another good tool is the Shimano crank puller

Another important tool is a chain removing tool like a Park Tool chain tool. Besides a flat tire, chain problems are a common cause of an unusable bike. While a variety of wrenches work on chain repair, a chain tool is designed to hold the links of a chain together while repairs are made and the chain is connected. An important chain accessory tool is the chain gauge. Similar to a tire air gauge, a chain gauge clamps down onto a chain and gives a stretch reading. When a chain reaches more than 1% stretch, it’s time to replace the chain.
