Bike Pedals Review

A bike pedal is the part of a bike that attaches to the crank which the rider pushes to move the bicycle forward. Shimano pedals are possibly the most trusted bike brand.  Pedals most are often made of a spindle, or axle, that is threaded to the end piece of a crank. This, in turn, is attached to the pedal itself, on which the rider rests his or her foot. The most basic type of bike pedal is the flat, or platform pedal. A popular platform pedal is the Dimension pedal, as are Cranks Brothers pedals.  Most riders will remember these types of pedal from their childhood, as they are they type that are most commonly found on children’s bicycles and tricycles. They are often made of plastic and are large and equipped with treads to prevent the rider’s foot from sliding off with exertion. Some types of platform pedals are equipped with toe clips and toe straps to accommodate non-cycling shoes, such as sneakers. In the sports of mountain biking and BMX, the term “platform pedal” usually prefer to a flat pedal that does not have a cage attached to it. Mountain bikers and BMXers prefer this type of pedal since it allows them greater maneuverability when rider on rough terrain and they cause less physical damage during a crash than other types. Atomlab pedals and CST pedals are popular amongst BMX riders.

Clipless pedals are a type of pedal that requires a specially made cycling shoe equipped with cleats. For example, you can pair Look pedals with Look cleats. These cleats allow the cyclist to clip the foot onto the pedal itself. These clipless pedals are smaller than the traditional platform pedals. The rider snaps his or her foot into to the clip and unlocks the foot by twisting the foot to release the clip. Using this type of pedal takes a bit of practice, but it is well worth the effort since it enables the cyclist to pedal with far more efficiency than when using a platform or traditional pedal. Clipless pedals are the most used road bike pedals since they allow the road cyclist to ride much faster. Odyssey pedals and Black Ops pedals carry different types and styles to meet your needs.

Mountain bikers also use clipless pedals, but due to the nature of mountain biking, they can pose a safety issue, since the cyclist may not be able to release the foot quickly enough to avoid crashing on difficult terrain. Mavic pedals carry clipless pedals that are very well known.  Therefore, some mountain bikers opt to use specially designed mountain bike pedals such a modified form of the platform pedal that will accommodate a more rugged form of cycling shoe. Mountain bikes, as well as BMX bikes, usually sports pegs like G Sport pegs

Pedal accessories include toe clips and straps, as well as the various pedals themselves. DMR pedals and Funn pedals offer a wide variety of pedals and accessories.

Models

The most common brand and model of bicycle pedal is the Shimano brand of clipless pedals. The Shimano Ultegra SL PD-6620 SPD-SL pedals offer a lightweight and durable clipless pedal with tension adjustment. Its wide cleats allows for more efficient pedaling and they are made of stainless steel for added durability. Other preferred brand are the Campagnolo pedals and Answer pedals.
