Bike Brake Rims Review

One of the most important parts on any bike are the bike rims and spokes.Rims are what your tires ride on and they provide stability for the bike to travel smoothly and safely. Old bike rims were quite heavy and clumsy. The bike spokes on these bikes often became loose, bent, or went missing altogether. Today’s bike rims are made much more durable and they are extremely lightweight in design. Rim sizes and styles do vary greatly, so talk to a bike expert if you’re not sure what choice to make for your bike and specific kind of riding. Velocity bike rims and Mavic rims are two noted brands.

Rims on modern bikes can be made from steel, which is very strong and hard to bend, but once a steel rim does get damaged, it’s hard to beat it back into shape. Alloy is another popular rime material and is utilized in some of the Schwinn and Wheel Master rims. It can be made in to any shape and is lightweight. Alloy rims are extremely strong and don’t become damaged easily. Some road racing bikes use carbon rims. They are the lightest rims available and are quite expensive to purchase too. Carbon rims don’t do well when they become wet, so use them in dry conditions only.

There are basically two different rim types. One is for a tubular tire that actually glues onto the rim. This type of tire is hard to repair or remove when punctured, but races get the best ride from this type of bike rim. The other bike rim type is called the clincher style. Tires on these bike rims are easy to access for repairs and the clincher rim and tire functions almost as good as the tubular style rim does. Although all rims use tires of course, not all tires have bike tubes in them. Some rims today like the Mongoose bike rims are also quick disconnect models that allow the rim and tire to be quickly removed without any tools. Some rims have serviceable cartridges in the wheel hubs for doing required maintenance.

What It’s For

Your bike rim is essential to the bike tires, tubes, and wheels. Wheels hold the hub and the disc rotor if your bike has disc brakes. The rim has a number of spokes that run from your bike hub to the rim itself. These spokes transfer the load from the hub to the wheel, which is caused by you and your bike.
