Bike Bags - Backpacks, Msngr, Gear Review

Most bicyclists, whether they are touring or commuting, need some way to carry their gear. There are many options ranging from small packs that fit on handlebars, trunks that fit on a rear bike rack, and messenger bags that sling over your shoulder. Each of these styles has pros and cons depending on what is being carried and how long it is going to be carried. Of course, the simplest option for carrying gear is using bags and backpacks. Some riders prefer to stick to popular brands like Adidas Backpacks. These are good for short trips that don’t require much gear. Carrying too much weight in a backpack can end up causing injuries, so for touring other options are recommended. The smallest options out there are saddlebags attaching under the bike seat and handlebar bags. For larger bags, a front or rear rack is required. These racks attach to the wheel of the bike and provide a flat surface to either strap things onto or attach a larger carrying device. Front racks add weight and therefore less mobility to the front tire so rear racks are preferred by most bicyclists. Once a front or rear rack is attached, panniers that hang on either side of the wheel or rack trunks that rest on top of the rear rack can be attached. There are many types of bike apparel and gear to choose from to make your ride efficient.

Why You Need it

For commuting and short trips that don’t require much gear, backpacks and messenger bags are the best way to go. Since they aren’t attached to the bike frame they don’t add extra weight to the wheels and frame, improving efficiency. Another perk of backpacks and messenger bags is that they don’t have to be left with the bike at your destination, making them great for commuting. When touring, the amount of gear being carried varies but it almost always is enough that backpacks are not recommended. For these situations, front or rear racks with panniers or rack trunks are recommended since these options offer the most carrying space. Arc'teryx backpacks offer an assortment of sizes and shapes for every type of rider. For any trip, handlebar bags and saddlebags are useful for storing items used regularly or that are good to have handy. Backpacks and rack bags can be hard to get into quickly while biking, so these smaller options are great for cameras and the like.
