BMX Bikes Review

BMX Bikes is a term used to describe bikes used in various forms of BMX racing. BMX can encompass vert, dirt, street and park racing in addition to traditional flatland BMX. BMX Bikes are far different from mountain bikes or road bikes even though these models are commonly designed and manufactured by some of the same biking and cycling companies.

BMX bikes are traditionally created from chromoly frames. Lower end models may use steel in place of chromoly in order to keep prices in the recreational and child bicycle range. BMX Bikes can even be found in training models for children just learning to ride.

BMX Bikes have several features that are model specific. These include multiple spokes, heavier frame weights and relatively short stature. Typical BMX Bikes include 36 spokes in the wheel frame. The spokes are used to support the wheels during intense pressure and weight. Some riders choose to go with 48 spokes per wheel in extreme cases.

BMX Bikes have heavier frames out of necessity rather than choice. BMX racing often includes the bike and rider leaving the ground and landing back on the frame. While carbon frames are perfect for speed, steel and chromoly provide the tensile strength needed for such air born maneuvers.

The short stature of the BMX Bikes is also kept out of necessity. Typically, wheels will measure between 16” and 18” for younger riders and 20” for professionals. Older riders may opt for a 24” wheel, but these bikes are not common in a professional setting.

In 2008, BMX Bikes were first introduced to the Olympic world as part of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Both men and women performed in the Olympic Games. Recreational BMX Bikes are one of the most popular bike styles in the United States and abroad.
