About Tubular Tires

There are many types of bicycle tires for various kinds of wheelsets, with each serving a particular purpose.  For example, BMX tires are often of the tubed kind, whereas many road bike users prefer tubeless tires. Each tire is categorized based on its type of construction.

Tubular tires, or often referred to as sew-up, is a bike tire that is closed by stitching the side of the inner tube to form a torus. Afterwards, this combination is glued (or taped) onto a special rim known as “sprint rim” or “tubular rim”. Because of its construction, tubular tires are labor intensive when it comes to repair and maintenance than other tire types. For example, even with a small puncture or wheels damage, the tire must be removed completely from the rim, then opened up, patched, sewn, before being glued back to the rim. Clicher tires might have replaced tubular for amateur racing, but tubular are still widely used for the wheels of track bikes used in indoor track racing. It is not surprising, since there are no sharp points on the track that can puncture the tires.

In total weight, tubular tires and rims are lighter than other tire types, which makes it accelerate more easily. Although for use in non-race, this weight advantage is somehow negated by the need to carry a spare tubular tire. Another advantage of tubular tires is its low susceptibility to pinch flats. In addition, when this tire gets flat during high speed races, it is still safe because the tire won’t roll off the rim when properly attached.
