Threadless HeadsetsAbout Threadless HeadsetsA bike headset is a bike part that allows the bike’s steering components to function properly by providing a point of rotation between the bicycle fork via the head tube and the stem, on which the handlebar is attached. A headset is a set of smaller components. It is usually made of two cups pressed together on top and under the fork’s headtube. Inside these cups are ball bearings to allow a smooth rotation by lessening the friction between the cup and the tube.
There are various kinds of headsets based on design. There are tapered headsets, threaded headsets, integrated headsets, threadless headsets, etc. The last type, the threadless headset, is gaining more following, according to reviews. It is a recent design, having been patented and popularized by manufacturer Cane Creek Cyling Components. This type of headsets is manufactured under license. Cane Creek headsets are popular for its ingenious design and quality. Just like a typical headset, the threadless uses two cups with bearing inside. However, unlike its threaded counterpart, the threadless does not have “threads” or attach to a threaded steerer tube. Instead, the steerer tube extends from the steerer fork all the way through the headtube and on top of the headset, which is held in place by the stem latched on top. Tightening the headset needs a tightening of the preload bolt, or also known as cap bolt, in the top cap. This bolt is attached to a star nut, which is installed inside the steerer tube. This nut serves as anchor by gripping the interior of the tube with gravitational downward force.
