About Spoke Kits

 
Bicycle spokes are parts of the bike wheels that connect the bike rims to the hubs. A traditional spoke has a “swaged” head, or flattened head, to keep it from pulling out of the flanges of the hub. The spoke turns a right angle bend past the head, forming an “elbow”. The spoke’s outer end has threads, and a special nut is fitted on it. This nut is called the “nipple”, which holds the spoke and keeps it from slipping through the rim.
 
Like most bicycle parts, bike rims and spokes have little parts that are necessary for them to function well. For example, a spoke protector is a sheet metal or plastic disc that fits between the right-side spokes and the cluster of the rear wheel. This is attached so the to keep the derailer or chain from getting entangled inside the spokes, which obviously could cause damage to the wheel or frame. Worse, it can cause serious injuries to the rider. Usually, spoke protectors are not needed on bikes used casually. However, on bikes that experience rough rides, the derailers are more prone to getting caught inside the spokes thus needing spoke protectors.
 
Another spoke parts that experts recommend to have in your tool kits are the nipples. As mentioned, it’s the job of the spoke nipple to hold the bicycle rim to the each respective spoke. Standard materials for nipples in the market nowadays are brass, aluminum, or chrome-plated steel. Regardless of what the spoke is made of, it’s important to remember that the spokes are long enough to fit into the whole length of the nipple threads.
