Many road bikes are installed with a brake lever which is situated in the handlebars for easy access by the biker. For bicycles with drop handlebars, more than one brake lever is usually installed for added convenience as it make sure that ever hand position can easily access the brake levers.
 
The reason why many bikers prefer using brake lever is because of its adequate leverage and simple procedure to activate the brakes which is particularly advantageous to novice bikers. There are 2 kinds of brake lever that bikers would usually prefer which is the hydraulic and the mechanical.
 
Mechanical brake levers come in two categories namely standard pull lever and the long pull lever can be used with any brake system while hydraulic brake lever can be maximized when used with a hydraulic brakes.
 
Hydraulic brake levers are said to be more durable than mechanical brake levers but requires specific lubrication and cleaning to maintain its consistent performance. If in case it encounters any damages, proper bike tools must be used. If you are a novice biker, ask a professional to repair the incurred damages to give you confidence of its reliability as it is used on rough locations.
 
Mechanical brake levers are usually preferred by many bikers because of its cheaper cost but have issues regarding the proper functioning of the Bowden cables on particular braking systems. It is advised that a biker inquire first regarding the compatibility of his brake system parts to ensure the right performance needed for its purpose.
