About Fixed Gear Bikes

Fixed gear bikes are known under a variety of names. In Australia, people are more likely to recognize them as fixed wheels. In the United States, however, most people tend to call them by their nickname, “fixie”. Regardless of what name you know them by, fixed gear bikes are basically single-speed bikes with fixed instead of variable gears, which consequently removes the bike’s ability to simply coast or move even when there’s no one’s pedalling.

This may not seem like a big deal at the start, but if you think about the many times you’ve simply coasted when biking, you should realize that coasting is actually an essential strategy and allows you to regain your strength and stamina without actually taking any rest. Without bike freewheels, there’s no way for your fixed gear bike to coast.

Of course, not everything’s bad with fixed gear bikes. For one thing, they’re easier to manage and you can even make your bike stop from moving without even touching your bike’s brakes. Compared to other types of bikes, one unique feature that you’ll enjoy when riding ones with bike single speed frames is how they let you ride...backwards!

If, in the end, you find fixed gear bikes more problem than they’re worth, then don’t hesitate to have your bike customized or buy a new one entirely. After all, compared to the standard price range for vehicles, investing in a new bike is no way as expensive. But this time, consider something more simple and less challenging like road bikes.
