About Cyclocross Tires

A cyclocross bike is a bicycle designed for the primary purpose of joining a cyclocross race. A cyclocross bike looks very similar to road bikes used in racing. The primary difference between the two lies on the geometry of the frame, and the wide and larger tires and wheelsets that cyclocross have.

The choice of cyclocross tires is very crucial. Tubular tires for cyclocross are very popular, according to reviews. This is because these tires can be used even at low press (22 to 40psi) without the risks of pinch flats. As experts often recommend, a low-pressure tire is preferable because it increases the surface area of contact, which in turn increases the traction. However, on the other hand, it increases the danger of the rim bursting out on the ground. This is a very big problem especially for clincher type tires because a bottomed-out rim can puncture or pinch the tire, which causes flat tire. However, this is addressed by tubular tires because they cannot pinch flat. Tubular tires also weighs less and can be ridden flat.

Clincher type tires for cyclocross use, on the other hand, have their own edge. The tire can be changed much quicker because unlike a tubular tire that has the rim and tube glued and sewed together, a clincher tire can be easily separated into its specific parts.

Another factor to consider when choosing cyclocross tires is the weather. Cyclocross races are often held during wet season, so the treads of the tires must be closely spaced to encourage low rolling friction.
