About Chainring Protectors
Riding on dirt trails can spoil your bicycle drivetrains system. Dirts that get stuck inside your chain and gears can block their movements. Like any bike parts, a dirty chain is also more prone to. This is why chainguard, or gear case, was invented to protect the bike crankset and chain from dirt, rocks and other contaminants. A chainguard also serves a secondary purpose, which is to prevent a biker’s trouser (or even his own leg) from being snagged by the chain or gear. Getting something caught in the chain can prove to be extremely dangerous, especially with fixed gear bikes.
Like any bike accessories, a chainguard is a matter of rider’s preference. There are many types of chainguards. There is the traditional “hockey stick” type, which extends from the seat stay forward. It covers the upper part of the chain up to the front side of the chainwheel. There’s the more common “full gear case”, or a bike guard. It is a half box-like piece of plastic used to encase the whole length of the drivetrain from the free hub to the crankset. This is more common with single gear bikes, as there has been no gear case designed to enclose derailleur gears. Fortunately, while there is no whole case for derailleur gears, there’s the chainring disc. It can be used on any crankset with multiple chainrings.
