About BMX Tires

BMX bikes, or simply BMX, are types of bicycle commonly used both in casual and professional leagues. It is a heavy-duty bike designed mainly for dirt trail races, motocross cycling, and freestyle stunts and tricks. The primary difference of a BMX compared to other bike types is the frame design. BMX bikes are typically shorter with short stem, Y-handlebars, and thick wheels and tires. The term BMX is nowadays used to describe all bikes with the same design to all dirt, trail, flatland and street dicplines.

BMX tires and wheels are very noticeable. The wheelsets are very thick with thick rims usually made of hard plastic. Majority of users prefer clincher type tires. BMX tires are usually 20 inches in diameter with a rim diameter of 406mm. They are also smaller because of several reasons: one, they are suitable for younger and smaller riders; two, their costs are cheapers; they are stronger, which is necessary in order to withstand the hard impact landings and stunts and jumps; and lastly, they have lower rotational inertia, which gives the wheel easier acceleration, which is necessary for some tricks.

For most flatland and street BMX, the wheels have 36 spokes while some more daring riders use 48 spokes. But others prefer the 3-star layout thick plastic rims. Race bike wheel usually have 36 spokes, but small riders can have BMX with 18 to 28 spokes. BMX wheels’ size varies, ranging from 18” to 26”.
