About Bike Washers

 
Bike washers are one of the infrequently heard parts of a bicycle. But ironically enough, they’re probably one of the most visible as well since they’re located in bike headsets.
 
A headset can either be threaded or threadless. Bike threaded headsets are considered the conventional type of headset. They consist of eight components: the crown race, the upper and lower bearings, the upper and lower frame cups, the upper cone or race, the locknut, and last but not the least, the washer.
 
So that center pull or cantilever brakes would work, cable stops are required. For cable stops to be incorporated with a bike, there would have to be a hanger integrated with the bike, and this is made possible when using the washer of a threaded headset. In the case of threadless headsets, which do not possess any bike washers, the hanger would then be made a part of the spacer.
 
As headsets are one of the most undervalued bike steering components, it’s not altogether surprising that even washers are underestimated as well in terms of what they can do for bikes. The headset is composed of two primary components: the head tube and the bicycle fork. There are also usually cups located on the upper and lower portion of your bike’s head tube – which are referred above as frame cups – and these are important because they contain inside them your bike’s bearings. Without sufficient bearings, your bike wouldn’t be able to balance on its wheels and carry your load effectively.
