About Bike U-Brakes

Bicycle brakes are important components for safety and protection. They slow down or stop a bike. Without a proper braking system, you could get yourself injured trying to stop your two-wheeler.

U-brakes work for both front and rear wheels. They have symmetrical arms, thus can effectively apply pressure. The arm pivots of the U-brake are attached directly to the fork or frame.

Used mostly on mountains bikes during the early 1990s, U-brakes are now standard on several other kinds of cycles, especially Freestyle bikes and frames. A good thing about U-brakes is that its application creates a sideways protrusion of the brake. Also, the exposed parts are relatively smooth and the cable system is minimal. This makes U-brakes ideal for freestyle BMX bicycles because protruding parts can get in the way of the rider’s body and cause damage.

In addition, U-brakes allow the driver to control the amount of braking power while riding. It may seem that U-brakes don’t have enough power to lock the wheels, but that is exactly what U-brakes are for. Having the ability to control the braking system is important for several moves. For instance, when doing a stop, the U-brake allows you to apply just enough pressure to lift the rear wheel off the ground while preventing your body from going over the handlebars.

According to sources, U-brakes have been designed to make gradual stopping stages. If you want to apply more brake, press the brake handle harder.

For optimal performance, it’s best to follow correct repair and maintenance steps to keep your U-brakes in good condition.
