There are four popular materials used to create bike frames. They include steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. This article will discuss your options for choosing the perfect mountain bike.

Steel

Steel is the oldest material used to create bike frames. There are still bikes created today using steel because of its numerous advantages. Maybe the most important benefit of steel bike frames is that they are one of your least expensive options. Steel’s strength-to-weight ratio is second only to titanium. It also offers built-in shock absorption. Since steel is not as stiff as aluminum, it’s a good choice to use for downhill adventures. You won’t feel the bumps like you would with a frame made from aluminum. Steel frames will also be relatively responsive during climbs and through corners.

However, there are a few disadvantages of riding a mountain bike constructed of steel. Although they are extremely durable, steel frames are the heaviest of the bunch. Most riders try to find the lightest bike possible, so steel definitely won’t be your choice if you are among them.

Aluminum

One of the most popular materials used to construct bike frames is aluminum. Aluminum can easily be manufactured into any shape, so these bike frames are easy to make. They are less expensive than carbon and titanium frames. They are also lighter than all but the carbon variety. Their light weight makes them ideal when you need to climb a lot. Unlike steel designs, aluminum frames will resist corrosion so they will be easier to maintain.

Although aluminum bike frames are lightweight, they are very rigid. This means that you will feel every bump on the trail. You will need to make sure you choose an aluminum bike that has full-suspension to counter this. Also, aluminum isn’t the most durable material, so you will need to replace your bike sooner.

Titanium

Many riders feel that titanium is the best material for bike frames. Titanium is relatively light and extremely durable. These bike frames will also be slightly flexible, so you will have a smoother ride. The amount of stiffness will be determined by the tube size of the frame.

Although these frames can last a lifetime, you will surely pay for it. Titanium is one of the hardest materials to weld and work with. Therefore, these bike frames will hit your wallet hard.

Carbon fiber

The last material used to make bike frames is carbon fiber. Carbon fiber isn’t actually a metal like the others but rather a fabric glued in the form of tubes. Therefore, they are easier to manufacture in different shapes and sizes. This is also the lightest bike frame you can buy, although it’s expensive like the titanium variety. Carbon bike frames will also offer flexibility, so you won’t feel as many bumps.

The biggest disadvantage of carbon bike frames is that they aren’t very durable. The frame will likely tear if you crash the bike. To add insult to likely injury, you won’t even be able to have the bike repaired. These mountain bikes also won’t be very responsive through a corner.

These are the most common materials used to make mountain bike frames. Steel and aluminum are ideal if you’re on a budget. If you have money to spare, then you should look into titanium and carbon fiber bike frames.
