Avid code disc brakesIf you’ve been around mountain biking for any amount of time you probably have heard of Avid. When AVID was purchased about 4 years ago by SRAM, makers of “GripShift” twist grip shifters , “RockShox” suspension forks, “Truvativ” cranksets/bottom brackets, and “Pit Stop”, their own line of bike cleaning and maintenance products, a shockwave of doubt flooded the forums and bike shops of the country. Would they be swallowed for the brandname and set of the back burner? Would the quality suffer? Were they going to kill Avid to make way for some new “house brand?”

Nope, not at all! 4 years later they still make some of the best brakes in the entire mountain bike industry and just in time for 08′ they’re re-introducing a new and improved “CODE” line of hydraulic disc brakes.

This year, the CODE series, which is intended for the entry level market as an “all mountain / freeride / downhill” brake is back and it’s been on a diet! After some long hours of brainstorming and introduction of magnesium as a base material, they emerged with a brake that was 60g lighter than the last model. That’s a 10% weight savings, without sacrificing any performance.

You still get 4 piston calipers for eye bulging stopping power, ambidextrous lever bodies with 3 cartridge bearing lever pivots and 2 piece lever with cam breakaway for smooth modulation and amazing feel, and “Center-Mount Pad Contact-Point Adjustment” so you can still flip the levers for a right handed front brake setup.

To go with it’s new body is the “New Look.” With an all-new galvanized body, jet black lever, and red anodized contact point adjustment knob, these brakes look the part.
Available in 3 rotor sizes 160, 185, and 203mm so you can dial in just enough grip.
All this performance and style should be available through your local bike shop and online from about $175-$250. (Depending on rotor size and location, and country.)
