Biking shorts are for serious cyclists. If you have a child who is displaying a remarkable interest in competitive or distance cycling, you may want to consider looking into biking shorts for kids. However, keep in mind that biking shorts for kids are still real sporting equipment. They won’t be that cheap and, the truth is, kids grow and they could need new shorts within a year or two. Also, bike shorts in general are typically associated with competitive speed racing or distance mountain biking and not downhill mountain biking. Downhill bikers of all ages typically favor protective clothing over wind resistance and see little benefits from skin-tight spandex. But those are just a few words of caution. If you do have a child who is racing competitively or who is enthusiastic about mountain biking trips, buying bike shorts will help reduce their wind resistance and will also make staying in the seat for long periods of time more comfortable. Plus, a lot of kids enjoy “dressing up” to go out biking and it could encourage their interest in the great sport of biking!

The good news is that bike shorts for kids are significantly cheaper than shorts made for adults. Of course, most kid’s bike shorts aren’t designed up to Olympic standards but, realistically, they’ll probably be more than adequate for your child’s biking needs. Keep in mind that bike shorts should be more than just shorts made of stretch material. Real bike shorts also include padding around the butt and crotch areas that is intended to make the bike seat feel more comfortable. Some kids may complain about the padding at first so explain what it’s there for and make them wear the shorts for at least one trip out. Also, since kids will be kids, let them choose the color of the bike shorts so that they feel more involved with the whole purchase. If they help out, they may be more excited to wear the bike shorts when they arrive.

One reliable brand that makes a popular line of bike shorts for kids is Aero Tech These kids bike shorts generally retail for $16.95 and come in a range of sizes and colors. Canari also make padded lycra kids shorts in sizes suitable for children aged 6 to 15. These sell for $39.95. For cold weather biking, Argon makes a full kids cycling bib that retails for $100. Finally, if you’re simply looking for something adorable, Kucharik makes a snap-on baby cycling suit made of “koolknit fabric” with a stars and stripes pattern. The baby suit retails for $39.95 also. Obviously, you’re not going to take your six month old on a daylong loop, but it could be a good way to instill a passion for biking in them at a young age.
